Well, add me to your list TJS, and Legendary Phil, I started as a kid also... The very first time was when TV guide had a Santa mask on the cover. I cut it out and glued cotton balls to the mask and tried to wear it. I might have been eight or so (maybe a little younger... I suppose we could look up the date for the TV Guide with the mask on it...I still remember the dashed lines around the holes where the eyes were to be cut out.) I figured out how to unroll the cotton balls to about 4 or 5 inches in length and being unsatisfied with that, tried to make my own beard mask. I also remember saving about 3 or 4 dollars and taking it to So-Fro fabrics (about 2 blocks down the road...) and buying some white fur, cutting it into three or four inch strips and sewing it by hand onto a red sweater with a zipper that my father had. I used some of the same fabric to make a beard (Well, come on...at least it was fuzzy, and a step up from the cotton balls rolled out!) I had my faithfull elf minion (my brother...) lead all the kids in my mom's daycare, all 9 of them, in to see me and sit on my lap. I don't think I was very convincing, but they were only three and four years old at the time, and we were all playing. I don't think I scarred anybody (or scared anybody) into disbelief at that point.
My next step came when I was 12 or 13. I worked in the lunchroom wiping down the tables after I ate for a free lunch. I pocketed the three dollars my mom gave me. I went to Zayer (predecessor to TJ Maxx) and bought a cheap suit for $19.99 (this was 1976 I think.) It had a flannel suit and nasty beard. I took the wig and beard to the live nativity at my church and wore it there (Wise Guy, you know!). The lady who did the costumes asked me if I would play Santa for her grandkids, because they had to go to their bio-dad's for Christmas and her son and their mom wanted Santa to come early for a special deliver before the kids left. I must have done OK, because they had me back for about five or six years in a row. I made $15 for my first gig.
I decided I didn't like the beard and the next year (now with a part time job and some real pocket money!) I went to Dallas & Co which was in an old house... (Still in Champaign, but now in a much bigger store) and splurged for a $35 wig and beard set (that was expensive!) And I got a very nice plush suit which I used for 10 years or so.
By the time I was 18 I had played for my school and a carolling group, and several other functions. I got hired to play on the downtown Champaign mall, where I had the priviledge of wearing a CW Howard Santa School suit with upholstery velvet and real rabbit fur trim. I used my beard and wig because the Yak set they had...well let's say it carried the residue from previous occupants...I sure wish I had that suit now though!
I have since done home visits, parties, corporate parties and emceed a couple of events also.
I have been doing it most of the time since. My sewing got much better (I even made my wife's wedding dress, three of the five brides maid's dresses and put a zipper in the fourth...as well as my sister-in-laws dress and brides maid's dress all in just over a month back in 1996- six total, my wedding present was a serger! Which I got before hand!) and as previously stated, last year I made the suit I have always wanted...Pics soon to follow. I have upgraded a number of elements of my suit this year so I am happy with where I am at right now...And last year and this I am real bearded! (OK, that was way too long, I don't balme you if you gave up half way through! LOL)
