Hey all,

I can't wait to see everyone at this year's summer BBQ. Who's coming and what are you bringing? I haven't decided yet what I am bringing. It will either be stuffed quahogs or chorico and peppers. My stuffed quahogs are great, but they take a lot of tie to make and I am not sure if I will have the time this week.

What are you bringing?

Hey guys, Wish I could be with you this weekend for the BBQ, but once again the summer months are keeping me almost as busy as during the school year. When I saw you all in February, many of you questioned me about the Candy Cane staffs that I had brought. Well, although I will not be there, three of those Santa Claus staffs will be. Be on the look out for them. Where as shipping for these is ridiculous it is easier for me to provide them to you at the gatherings. The cost for each is $40.00. They are tall, but can be cut down to suit your height. I have come up with a better way to attach the crystals that sit on top of the globes on the staffs, so you should not have a problem with them coming off. They are all hand made, painted and there is not one alike. I will post photos of the three staffs coming to the BBQ in my Gallary. If you have questions, feel free to send me a message. Again Folks, I do wish I could be with you. Mary Ellen and I had such a wonderful time when we met you in February. I guess we'll have to wait to catch up until our gathering in Cape Cod April 2011. Have a wonderful weekend to all of you.

Santa Bob ,

I look forward to meeting with you and all the other Santas again for our 2nd annual cookout. So far the weather says a 40% chance of a thinder shower but should be good for us and I am hoping we get by with no issues with the weather. It will be close to 90 degrees tho so dress light, LOL. I am starting to get excited about the cookout already. It was a great time last year and most of us yacked for the entire day, oh, we ate well too! Santa Mike Rielly will be hosting a final, for us anyway, Santa Claus Oath presentation so those who have not signed and wish to may do so. All in all we have an awesome time. If anyone is so inclined they can use one of Santa Manny's many canoes to tour the Wood River. Santa Manny will instruct proper use and provide life jackets to use while on the canoes. He even will let you borrow a rod to do a bit of fishing if you wish. He has a horseshoe area and bocce ball too! Something for everyone and brotherhood too! Nothing but great friends and wonderful company. 3 days and counting.

The latest weather update says only a 20 chance of precipitation on Saturday and no thunderstorms forecast so it is looking better all the time. Going to be a bit warm but should be a great day! Looks like even more Santas will be attending.

Dutch, the best one to come to would be the one in April on Cape Cod for a long weekend. Bring the kids and they can swim etc. Nice mini-vacation after the holidays.

Well, the barbecue was a great success and everyone had a wonderful time. we had a total of 30 or so Santas plus Mrs. Clauses and friends and helpers and the food was great and the comraderie was awesome. It was in the mid 90's but Santa Manny and Delores Point's home has plenty of shade. The local news station in Providence, Channel 12, was there and took some footage of everyone and all the Santas were invited to come to the television station on Monday morning to be in a segment of "Rhode Show" which is a local tv show. I believe about 10 of us will be going. The footage shot on Saturday may be included in the Rhode show too! All in all it was a great time and we are already looking forward to next year.

Ahhh … it was a hot … hot … day in RI for the Santa BBQ … but what a great day it was at Santa Manny and Delores Point's home on the lazy river. It couldn’t have been better … lots of great food and a great cast of characters. OK … maybe we could have done without the tree falling on the car … ouch! The TV crew from CH. 12 was a pleasant surprise that added a bit of excitement to the event … and of course the “open air beard saloon” was an educational and fun experience. My but our Santas looked great. I loved seeing all the Santas in their summer outfits … what a hoot! I’ll have to work on a summer outfit for this Mrs. Claus. These gatherings are so very useful. So much valuable information is exchanged. Thanks to all the people who helped make this such a wonderful event. I’m looking forward to our next get together.

Hi all Santa and Mrs. Claus. I wish I could have been there but was busy making another appearance at a Camping resort to help celebrate Christmas in July. It sounds as if all had a great time and I certainly miss meeting many of old faces and some of the newer ones.

I will try to set aside my time for the event in April for the Cape Cod Santa get together.

I hope all are having a great summer. I sure love this heat. LOL

The photos I've located are nice, but I'm not seeing any with any of the Mrs. Clauses in them? Did anybody take any photos with all the attendees there? If so, it would be nice to be able to see everybody~

Actually there were a couple of Mrs. Clauses there. Unfortunately, they are usually the ones taking the pictures!

Oh, maybe there's someone out there that attended that did snap one or two of others that attended besides the Santas or better yet a group photo with everyone there in it that you don't know about. I do hope that's the case.

If not, I do hope at your next meeting, someone will step forward and take at least one photo of all the attendees, (minus one taking the photo).

    • Published by William B. Gilley in 1821, “The Children’s Friend. Number III. A New-Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve”, is believed to be the first book published in America to include lithographic illustrations. This book includes a poem about “Santeclaus” along with eight colored illustrations.

However, what makes this book significant is the poem and illustrations are thought to be the earliest known visual representation of Santa Claus in a sleigh pulled by reindeer. The poem also marks Santa’s first appearance on Christmas Day rather than December 6, the feast day of St. Nicholas.

      The Children’s Friend. Number III.
A New-Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve
      by William B. Gilley, 1821

      Old Santeclaus with much delight
His reindeer drives this frosty night.
O’er chimney tops, and tracks of snow,
To bring his yearly gifts to you.

The steady friend of virtuous youth,
The friend of duty, and of truth,
Each Christmas eve he joys to come
Where love and peace have made their home”

Through many houses he has been,
And various beds and stockings seen,
Some, white as snow, and neatly mended,
Others, that seem’d for pigs intended.

Where e’er I found good girls or boys,
That hated quarrels, strife and noise,
Left an apple, or a tart,
       Or wooden gun, or painted cart;

To some I gave a pretty doll,
       To some a peg-top, or a ball;
No crackers, cannons, squibs, or rockets,
To blow their eyes up, or their pockets.

No drums to stun their Mother’s ear,
      Nor swords to make their sisters fear;
But pretty books to store their mind
With knowledge of each various kind.

But where I found the children naughty,
In manners rude, in temper haughty,
       Thankless to parents, liars, swearers,
Boxers, or cheats, or base tale-bearers,

I left a long, black, birchen rod,
Such as the dread command of God
Directs a Parent’s hand to use
When virtue’s path his sons refuse

    • 10 Essentials to Being a Better Santa
Here are some DOs and DON'Ts on being Santa

      Treat every child with respect.

Never make fun of a child.

Look into the child’s eyes when you speak to them.

Speak softly. Children are sharing confidences with you.

Acknowledge a child’s requests even if you don’t understand them.

Never promise a toy request to avoid a child’s disappointment.

Never promise a pet. Santas a toymaker and only animals produce pets.

If the child can’t remember their wish list, assure them you know what they want.

Never leave a child wondering if Santa heard their Christmas wishes.

Every child worries about being on Santas “Naughty or Nice List”. Tell each child “You’re on the “Nice List.” It will bring happiness to everyone!

    • How do You Portray Santa?
Portraying Santa is acting; it is a characterization of a mythical character.

Most of us never think of ourselves as actors, but we are. Certain characteristics of Santa Claus have been handed down from one generation to another. The way we dress and conduct ourselves all follow an established pattern.

Santa Claus is one of the most recognizable characters throughout the world. This came about from the advertising campaign of the Coke Cola Company and the creative painting genius, of Haddon Sundblom. Coke Cola was looking to increase winter sales of its soft drink and hired Sundblom to produce illustrations for prominent magazines. These illustrations appeared during the holiday season from the late 1930s into the early 1970s and set the standard for how Santa should look.

This characterization of Santa with rosy cheeks, a white beard, handlebar mustache plus a red costume trimmed in white fur is the image most everyone has in their minds. Unconsciously people are going to judge you against that image. If your beard isn’t white or you have a soiled suit it will register with the onlooker.

By the way, the majority of Sundblom's paintings depict Santa with a Brown Belt and Brown Boots. Not until his later illustrations did he change the color to Black for these items. Within the past few years many costume companies have offered the Coke Cola Suit and it has become very popular. You can tell it by the large buttons and absence of fur down the front of the jacket.

No matter how you portray Santa, be it home visits, schools, churches, parades, corporate events, malls, hospitals we all make an entrance and an impression! The initial impression we make determines if our client will ask us to return.

      The 5 Second Rule

I have a theory: When you enter the presence of your audience you have about 5 seconds to make people believe you are the real Santa.

    • Not Everyone Can Be Santa!
Yes, I said it and it is not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. I do view many Facebook sites along with websites and posted photos. Frankly, many of these postings should have never been put on public display.

    • Auld Lang Syne
Every New Year’s Eve at the stroke of midnight, millions around the world traditionally gather together to sing the same song, “Auld Lang Syne”. As revilers mumble though the song’s versus, it often brings many of them to tears – regardless of the fact that most don’t know or even understand the lyrics. Confusion over the song’s lyrics is almost as much of a tradition as the song itself. Of course that rarely stops anyone from joining in.
